Call of Duty: Black ops: Cold War Review

Call of Duty: Black ops: Cold War Review

Hello, fellow Meisterkhandriacs! Today I will be discussing the new Black ops entry, Cold War. Before I get started I want to put a disclaimer. This article will probably have spoilers and if you’re not a COD fan then some of this may get confusing. In this article, I will be talking about my review, the canonical timeline, and what I think will happen with future installments.

I’ll start with a broad review for anyone who wants to know what they are getting if they buy this game. We can call this The Before you Buy Review. Cold War is not a reboot of the Black ops franchise (entirely). It is set in 1981, after the events of Black ops 1. You team up with the CIA to find a soviet named Persius. The campaign is a lot of fun, but it also has its downfalls. The campaign can be very glitchy at times and is almost ridiculously short, coming in at four hours. I believe the game is like this because of Covid-19. All in all the campaign is fun, albeit, a bit rushed near the end. Cold War has other game modes than just the campaign. It has Multiplayer, Warzone, and Zombies. There is no couch co-op in any part of this game, which I feel is a major loss. I haven’t tried Multiplayer or Warzone yet, and I doubt I ever will. I’ve never been one to enjoy online games, so I assume that these game modes are just fine if you enjoy multiplayer. As for zombies, I have a lot more to say. The zombie mode is actually a lot of fun. You can pick between endless waves or 20 waves. The only map they have at the moment is a redone version of the original map from World at War. My biggest problem is that zombies get sort of repetitive, especially when you have no one to play it with. All in all, I give this game a 6/10. It would be higher, but the game feels sort of incomplete. I would have preferred they wait to make the game the best it could be rather than have a COD title in 2020, but other than that, it was worth the purchase.

SPOILERS!!! This is your warning, I don’t know what I’m going to be talking about, but I’m going to spoil the game if I have to.

I thought that I could make Canonlogical timeline and future installments two separate parts, but it turns out I need both of them to make my point. We need to talk about 2 separate timelines before I get in it. The two timelines are Black ops (Pre Cold War) and Modern Warfare (Orginal).

I’ll start with the Modern Warfare timeline. It’s pretty simple. Modern Warfare has three games that go together. Modern Warfare 1, 2, and 3. Instead of adding a new installment to this franchise, they decided to start again with the Modern Warfare reboot. I’ll explain why this is important later.

Before Cold War, the Black ops timeline was kind of simple, World at War, Black ops, Black ops 2, Black ops 3, and Black ops 4. Now with this new installment, it added a game between Black ops 1 and 2.

I know what you’re saying: “Brett, we know this, why are you bringing this up?”, well, I’ll tell you. I believe that Call of Duty is working towards a shared universe between all of their games. Before buying Cold War I thought that it was a reboot of the Black ops game, but after playing it I realized that I’m kind of right. I believe that Cold War is a soft reboot and that Call of Duty plans to erase Black ops 2-4 from the canonical timeline. “Why do I say this?” you ask. Well, I’ll tell you by showing you my evidence.

1) They recast everyone from the previous Black ops games. I believe that they did this as a fresh start to their new universe.

2) There is a connection between Cold War and the new Modern Warfare. There is a man by the name of Zakhaev in both games and they both look similar to each other.

I believe that Zakhaev is a clue to the future of Call of Duty. Not only is he the main antagonist from the original Modern Warfare, but he is also in the rebooted Modern Warfare, and now he is part of the newest Black ops installment. I’m sad to see Black ops 2 go, but I’ll happily trade it in for the possibility to see Mason, Woods, and Price together. I’m very excited to see where this is going to go. Here is the new timeline based on the new canon.

1) World at War

2) Black ops

3) Black ops: Cold War

4) Modern Warfare (Reboot)

Are they working towards connecting the two franchises? Do you want this to happen or not? Let me know what you think in the comments!
